Robertson Aircraft Archive

Eight pieces total: Five checks-four accomplished and endorsed on the verso by Lindbergh-from the Robertson Aircraft Corporation; two itemized invoices from Ryan Airlines, Inc.; and one Ryan Airlines envelope with an itemized checklist accomplished by Lindbergh; each related or pertaining to the story of the construction of the Spirit of St. Louis. The check number 2951 to "Harry Hall Knight, Trustee", was the first sum of money by Robertson Aircraft donated to the building of Spirit of St. Louis. The check number 2391 was Lindbergh's last paycheck as a mail pilot.

Check No. 2229, Robertson Aircraft Corporation, Anglum, Missouri; from Boatmen's Bank, Saint Louis; dated Dec. 15th, 1926, measuring approximately 8"x3"; for a sum of $150.00, Lindbergh's next to last paycheck as a mail pilot, for salary from Robertson Aircraft for Dec. 1st through the 14th, 1926. At "Pay to the order of," Lindbergh has scripted in his own hand, "Chas. A. Lindbergh"; signed "Wm B Robertson", and endorsed on the verso by Lindbergh, "CA. Lindbergh Jr".

Check No. 2391, Robertson Aircraft Corporation, Anglum, Missouri; from Boatmen's Bank, Saint Louis; dated Dec. 31st, 1926, measuring approximately 8"x3"; for a sum of $159.25, Lindbergh's last paycheck as a mail pilot, for salary and expenses, from Robertson Aircraft for Dec. 15th through the 31st, 1926. At "Pay to the order of," Lindbergh has scripted in his own hand, "C.A. Lindbergh"; signed "Wm B. Robertson", and endorsed on the verso by Lindbergh, "CA. Lindbergh Jr".

Check No. 2713, Robertson Aircraft Corporation, Anglum, Missouri; from Boatmen's Bank, Saint Louis; dated Jan. 27th, 1927, measuring approximately 8"x3", for a sum of $7.15, for an unknown reimbursement. At "Pay to the order of," Lindbergh has scripted in his own hand, "C.A. Lindbergh"; signed "Wm B. Robertson", and endorsed on the verso by Lindbergh, "CA. Lindbergh Jr".

Check No. 2763, Robertson Aircraft Corporation, Anglum, Missouri; from Boatmen's Bank, Saint Louis; dated Jan. 31st, 1927, measuring approximately 8"x3", for a sum of $175.00, Lindbergh's monthly stipend from Robertson Aircraft while working on the Spirit of St. Louis project. At "Pay to the order of," Lindbergh has scripted in his own hand, "C.A. Lindbergh"; signed "Frank Robertson", and endorsed on the verso by Lindbergh, "CA. Lindbergh Jr".

Check No. 2951, Robertson Aircraft Corporation, Anglum, Missouri; from Boatmen's Bank, Saint Louis; dated Feb. 18th, 1927, measuring approximately 8"x3", for a sum of $1000.00. Paid to the order of "Harry Hall Knight, Trustee" for the Spirit of St. Louis project; signed "Frank Robertson", and endorsed on the verso "Harry Hall Knight, Trustee". This check was the first sum of money donated to the syndicate for building the Spirit of St. Louis.

Ryan Airlines, Inc., itemized invoice, reading: "Sold TO Capt. Chas. Lindbergh San Diego Calif.", one page, quarto, dated April 4th, 1927. Invoice list eight items totaling $923.27 for Spirit of St. Louis, including "1 Earth Conductor Compass for $750.00 less 20%...", signed bolding at the bottom margin "Recd Payment 4-4-27 AJ Edwards".

Download a PDF copy of the auction invoice for Robertson Aircraft Archive. The Spirit of St. Louis-Robertson Aircraft Archive was acquired through auction at Sotheby's, New York, NY, on Monday, 14 June 1993. The archive was from the Otto Kallir Collection of Aviation History, Sotheby's sale # 6452. These items were sold as one lot and originally included ten items. Two items, checks accomplished and signed by Lindbergh to Ryan Airlines for construction of the Spirit of St. Louis, were donated to a public museum. The eight items here comprise the balance of the lot from the Kallir Collection.
