The 2005 Lindbergh Award Event will be held at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Saturday, May 21, 2005

The evening's highlights include a reception and dinner in the Great Hall, presentations by Yolanda Kakabadse and Bertrand Piccard, who will each receive the honorary Lindbergh Award presented by Kristina Lindbergh, and recognition of our 2005 Lindbergh Grant Recipients. Erik Lindbergh will be the Master of Ceremonies. On Friday, May 20, the "Legends of the Sky" hangar party will be held at the Golden Wings Museum on the grounds of the Anoka County Airport in Blaine, Minnesota. This event will feature Burt Rutan, who recently won the $10 million X Prize competition with his aircraft SpaceShipOne.

    Dr. Bertrand Piccard
    Dr. Bertrand Piccard
Dr. Bertrand Piccard is best known for completing the first non-stop round-the-world balloon trip in March 1999 with English co-pilot Brian Jones. This flight captured seven world records, including the longest flight in both duration and distance by any aircraft at 19 days, 21 hours and 47 minutes, traveling 45,755 km. It is considered by many to have been the "last great aviation adventure of the 20th century." Dr. Piccard's work demonstrates balance through his appreciation for nature and the use of sophisticated technology as well as environmentally friendly solar power to make such a balloon flight possible. Currently, Piccard is working on a new project called Solar Impulse that aims to re-enact the great 'firsts' and record-breaking flights that highlighted 20th century aviation, using only solar energy. The final objective is a solar-powered around the world flight.

    Yolanda Kakabadse
    Yolanda Kakabadse
Yolanda Kakabadse has been an environmental leader since 1979 when she co-founded Fundacion Natura in Ecuador, to this day one of the world's most effective national environmental non-government organizations. She went on to become Ecuador's Minister of the Environment, then President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the world's largest association of conservation agencies and organizations. (Charles Lindbergh met with IUCN leaders in the 1960s, volunteered to watch endangered species as he traveled the world, and ultimately began cataloguing exotic animals in each of the countries he visited.) More recently she founded the Foundation for the Future of Latin America, which has been a leader in conflict resolution around principally environmental issues on the continent. She describes herself as an engineer as she looks for solutions to problems. However, she is also a strong moral leader who has written and spoken often on the role of ethics in globalization and how to find ways of giving higher priority to "being rather than having." She also places a strong emphasis on the principles of sustainability in a globalized society.

John and Martha King of King Schools, Inc., will serve as the Masters of Ceremonies and Erik Lindbergh will host the evening.
